Welcome to the Shift RCT Study

You are invited to take part in a research study evaluating the usefulness of a novel smartphone app, Shift, specifically designed for supporting the mental health and wellbeing of doctors in training.

To participate in this research study, you need to meet the following inclusion criteria:

  • Currently employed as a doctor in training (including interns, hospital medical officers, resident medical officers, non-accredited trainees, postgraduate trainees, principal house officers, registrars, and specialist trainees),

  • Own an internet-enabled smartphone using either Android or Apple OS,

  • Willingness to provide informed consent to participate.

Participation in any research study is voluntary. If you do not want to take part, you do not have to. Your decision will not affect your relationship with UNSW Sydney, the Black Dog Institute, NSW Health, or any other organisation.

If you decide you want to take part in this research, you will be required to read the Participant Information Statement and Consent Form to participate. You will then be asked to answer some screening questions. Based on your answers, if you are eligible to participate in the study, you will be asked to:

  • Complete a 15-minute online baseline questionnaire;

  • Over a four month period, we will ask you download the app and use it for 30 days;

  • If you are allocated to the intervention group, we will ask you to answer two 10-minute follow-up questionnaires;

  • If you are allocated to the control group, we will ask you to answer three 10-minute follow-up questionnaires.

  • Each time you return a follow-up questionnaire, you can enter the draw for a $100 or $200 voucher.
